Every wardrobe needs a wrap dress. Why? There’s something effortlessly elegant about the wrap dress. It hugs your curves to accentuate your figure, at the same time as making you look sophisticated and demure. Not familiar with the style? It’s time to get acquainted. The ultra feminine design consists of a V-neck front that is formed by wrapping one side of fabric across the other and securing it with two ties either at the back or the front. Or alternatively there are wrap effect dresses that mimic the same style, but can be slipped on without needing to be secured with a tie.
The history of the wrap dress
There are discrepancies about who was first to introduce the iconic wrap dress to the fashion world, but there is no denying Belgium born designer Diane Von Fursternberg had a lot to do with its meteoric rise. In 1974 she produced her first ever wrap dress to huge acclaim and over the next two years went on to sell over 5 million of them. No mean feat.
Back then the wrap dress was a symbol of empowerment for hundreds of women and to this day there is a special feeling you get when slipping one on. It’s a real “no messing, ready for the day kind of dress.” One of the reasons the wrap dress has become a style staple is it flatters virtually every body type. The wrap front does wonders for complementing a full bust and elongates the neck, creating a leaner silhouette, while the tie belt is great for showcasing your waist.
The original wrap dress was rendered in jersey, but you can find styles in almost any fabric these days, from lightweight linen to luxury crepe. Long-sleeved jersey styles are a popular choice as they can be worn all year round and thanks to their stretch properties they allow you to move with ease and provide comfort all day long. Not to mention you can bung the majority of them in the washing machine, so no more trips to the dry cleaners. Chiffon and silk feel beautiful against the skin and lend a feeling of pure romance to the design, while velvet and scuba styles make a sensual statement after dark.
Chiffon maxi styles lend a romantic air, particularly when paired with gold accents.
